Today's Writing Prompt: Technology

What modern technology would you have trouble living without?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Adrian from Canada
The one piece of technology that I could not live without would be my corkscrew.

I enjoy all types of wines, red wines, bordeaux, shiraz, you name it. Unfortunately, the only way I can gain ready access to this precious liquid is with my trusted corkscrew!

What were you reading my mind? I was thinking about technology on my walk this morning (at 4:45am) with the dogs! I love technology, and I guess I would have to say that the one I would have trouble living without is the PC. It has opened up so many worlds. I use a PC for work every day, sometimes for mundane things like email, but I also get to be creative with it too. Most of my hobbies of late are centered around a PC as well, web design, and digital photography. So while I really love my cell phone and DVR, if I had to give them all up to keep my PC, it would not be a difficult decision!

Technology of today will be our history tomorrow -- we will sit around and say "do you remember when . . . " and our grandchild will marvel (or laugh) at how backwards our life sounded. Didn't we do the same?

of course my cellphone..

I get many hours of enjoyment out of our computer. I can't leave the house w/out my cell and the t.v. is a mainstay. I don't know... technology is apart of my everyday life, it's hard to imagine living w/out any of it. But I think I could.

Oh, I could say my cell phone... or the Internet ... or my laptop (connected to the Internet or not) ... but all of these things are related to one (semi-)modern technology: electricity. One of my worst nightmares is something happening to the infrastructure of my city, state, or country to knock out electricity for an extended period of time.

I think most likely the internet.
They say society is always 3 days from meltdown.
Imagine if the internet was destroyed. What would the world be like three days later.
Something to think about :P

Definitely, my cell-phone. I can't leave home without it! It connects me to my friends and to all the important people in my life.

I could not live without my DVR. I don't know how I was able to watch TV before it came into my life. My DVR allows me to record programs that air after my 10pm bedtime. I can record my trashy daytime shows. My DVR gives me something to look forward to when I get home for work. It's a nice end to a long day.

I don't realize the pang in my heart and the relentless yearning for my home wi-fi until I'm in another location that requires a direct hookup.

...or reminded to appreciate the technology I love by engaging in the writing prompt. Thanks! ;)

Oh my, do I have to pick just one! My cellphone is definitely at the top of the list. I do not know what I did before I had one. Actually I do remember having to dig up a quarter to use a pay phone to call home before. And the computer! OMG I LOVE emailing people and chatting online. I love talking on the phone but writing what I want to say is so much better!

I think the internet:

Well, oddly, not my computer. I like how it makes some tasks quicker and easier, but on balance I often think it reduces my productivity by distracting me. "I'll just check my messages one more time." Or "Let me just go and google that." Hours lost in pursuits I wouldn't have bothered with except that they were so tempting when there was a pretty green laptop sitting open on my desk.

No, the technology I would have the most trouble doing without is my stereo. For a very long time CBC radio has been the soundtrack to my life. Even now, it is a rare day when I don't tune in to catch the news or listen to a favourite program or two. And then there's my music. Starting with Mum and Dad's albums (the Platters, Elvis Presley, Neil Sedaka) that my sisters and I danced to in the living room for hours on end, music has been a major part of my life. There's nothing better than some energy-raising rock and roll when it comes time to clean, east coast folk when I feel a need to wallow in homesickness, or jazzy world music as we're settling into an evening of cooking and eating with friends. My life would be a lot less interesting without it.

I think the toaster is a lovely bit of modern technology. Toasting toast over an open flame is just near to impossible. And speaking of that, the machine that slices the bread just perfectly so that my toast is perfect in everyway. That is something I do love. And speaking of toasting things, gotta love a bagel, which isn't really technology, but is delicious with cream cheese. I would hate to live without that.

Oh, and my laptop.

technological artifacts that I would have trouble living without would include toilet paper, zippers, band-aids, q-tips, hot and cold running water, flush toilets, light bulbs (and electricity) and most of all my word processor; as an aside, I could do without the car and the bomb

C. Beth said...

Nothing like being generic, but it's true--I'd have trouble if my Internet access was suddenly taken away.

However, it might be a good stretch for me. Need information? Go to the library. Need friends? Get together with real-life people.

The Internet can be both wings and a crutch.

I would think that most people would say something like their phone, or their computer, or even their TV. I think that those people are far too naive in what we would be most missing.

I think the thing we would be missing the most is our cars, or other mooter transportation. How many Americans can bike to work (either able to or healthy enough to), how many can carry their groceries home? Cars are the most underrated things we use.

So, when you read this, go out and hug your car. It deserves the respect

In a sense, I find it pathetic to say I would have trouble living without any piece of modern technology. We have lived without it forever. I am afraid I should forget how perfectly well my life was 30 years ago, if in here I would state I could not live without 90's/00's technology. Time passes, needs change, though modern needs tend to be more like desires.

I thought for a moment that I couldn't live without my cellphone. But, actually, I can. Then I thought, well I certainly couldn't live without my TV. But, truth be told, I don't need a TV. Then, it occurred to me . . . don't take my iMAC w/internet access away. Don't take away my ability to email (cause I'd rather do that than talk to someone), blog, watch episodes of shows I missed, listen to music, etc.

Yeah, can't live without my computer.

I would have a hard time living without my cell phone. It is not that I necessarily use it that much but since we got rid of our home phone it is how everyone keeps in touch with me now. I love it as I can be anywhere and doing anything and can just pick up the phone, In the old days, if I stepped out, the phone did not get answered. I play music on it when I walk, I take pictures, make phone calls and use it as an alarm clock. So, yes, I need it.

i dont use my cell like every other teenage girl to text like a maniac and talk for hours.
i text my friends when i have to and i call out for emergencies or serious things like that.
my ipod has become an escape for me. i sit at work where these women talk crap about everyone (not doubting they talk about me) so i use my ipod to block them out. i can read better and focus better... so im stuck between the two.

My relationship with technology is a love-hate one. Although I love and use them frequently, I know how much damage they can do... ever heard about E-Waste?? I also try to never lose sight of life before them. Remember the sound of a typewriter? Remember the day you had to give your mother the phone number for your friends house and she couldn't reach you if you weren't there? ...I got rid of my cell in Aug and only recently got it back. I was fine with it. I think it was more difficult for my friends who had no idea how to get ahold of me...alas, such is our modern bondage...

The word processor. I can type for hours, but if I have to write for a long period my wrist hurts - pathetic isn't it.

I doesn't help that my job involves writing a lot down quickly.

This is the easiest question to answer that you've posted yet. Without a doubt it's gotta be the internet.

It allows you to find almost any information you want quickly and from multiple sources so if there are differing opinions on something you can find out all of them. It could be anything from the news, to the definition of a word, to what happened on this day in history, to how to bake a great apple pie!

It allows you to communicate with almost anyone, anytime, even if they are on the other side of the world through email, instant messaging, video messaging, or a blog.

And of course it's a way to waste time or have fun by "surfing the web" or playing games.

I think it's probably the most widely used, and most useful modern technology there is.

The amount of new technology boggles my mind. It seems that no sooner have I bought what to me is a new “toy”, than it has already been replaced on the market with a newer model before I’ve had it a month. Grr! The DVD/Blu-Ray thing irks me, too. Do I now have to go out and get a Blu-Ray player and replace all of my DVD’s?? I just look independently wealthy. Not to mention frequent updates to software that I work with, and not necessarily for the better. I guess technology has its place, but it would be nice if things could stay the same long enough for us to save up enough money for the next new, “mandatory” thing.

So it seems that cell phone and internet are the winners in this popularity contest. What does it mean? It means we want to be connected to other people! It says that we don't crave the technology as much as the opportunity to be with others, no matter what the means are! Pretty human. Technologies or no technologies, modern time or not - all we need is love and attention, as it has always been :)

Personally, I could live without much technology at all. My favorite coffee is one from a fire heated percolator when we go camping. Hmm. I don't do much TV. I like my internet friends, but don't feel the need to sit here all day (I feel guilty with the time I do spend on the computer) I have too much hair to bother blow drying. My cell phone just sits in my purse.
I guess the ONE THING I couldn't live without is my children's DIGITAL THERMOMETER. I cringe just thinking about the looks on their faces if I had to stick a glass tube of mercury where the sun doesn't shine.

Now that I am forced to live without ANY modern conveniences, and have to walk a mile just to share thoughts online, there is only one technology I truly value, and that is the butane lighter.

I'm sure I could learn to light a cooking fire in camp without one, but it's just so darn convenient -- it saves a half an hour at least. But even that would fall by the wayside of desires if it had to.

Believe in yourself -- its easy if you just don't try to. Think about now, this moment. Don't worry about tonight or tomorrow.

Anyway, I don't think technology is good at all, it should be "eradicated" in order to live a much healthier life and have a nicer and safer planet.

I could live without any technology... I would readily give up my cell phone, I don't watch much TV, I don't use my iPod as often as I used to and I waste too much time online. My life would be much simpler without much of today's "modern technology."

After a time it would also be much lonelier. I depend on computers and the internet to keep in touch with friends, and even some family members. "Social networking" sites don't replace real face-to-face socialization, but they do help to plan and organize gatherings. I suppose I would be most reluctant to give up the internet.

Plus, you can find the answer to almost any question online!

Definitely couldn't live without my computer. So many things in life are possible now (that weren't possible 10 years ago) because of the internet. Think about how many times you couldn't quite remember that special recipe, and google saved the day. Or what about video-chatting with a loved one who was stationed in Iraq. And let's not forget Youtube, which has arguably surpassed television in terms of both entertainment value and educational benefits.

I can't imagine life without a computer. Here I am right now typing this on my computer! Right now you can connect to people all over the world and even call people via computer for free! And because I'm a typing type of person, its natural for me.

I try and not get too dependant on one form of communication/media anything in general really...and recently at work we had a major server crash. So it was goodbye to internet for 1 whole week. I survived. And recently, I weaned myself off my TV and computer games (yes, I don't mind the occasional computer game) dependancy. And since my phone hardly rings anymore...I am going to make the bold statement of... I think I can live without most forms of modern technology :)

I could not live without my laptop. or rather I could live, but I wouldn't want to. I rely way too much on the internet to keep me entertained. Offer me the tv or the internet and I'd choos the interenet anyday. I love the interentet. Love it. What did we do without it?

definitely my cell phone.
we're one of the many couples who forwent our landline telephone when moving into our first home 6 years ago.
i would be cut off from voiee to voice communication without that handy dandy little mobile phone.

My iPhone. It sounds silly, but everything is in that damn thing. I'm new in my city (woo hoo Portland, OR), and the GPS feature is a life-saver, since my girlfriend doesn't know her way around either. I've had PDAs before, and they've all been clunky or hard to use. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, go Apple.

electricity...all is hooked up to the almighty power cord. four hurricanes and a few tornadoes ago, i camped out in a humid, dark house. no hot showers, a possibly unsafe water supply, lines for precious ice, cell phones plugged into auto lighter ports to recharge, no hot coffee or food, and no news or nternet access.

Due to punishment i've surpassed my need for my phone, but in return i've been dependant on the internet and more specifically a series of blog/ chatting sites. I would also struggle with out a microwave because how else am i suppose to eat?

I would have trouble living without my handheld GPS! I never wanted a computer to go with me on my wilderness trips--I resisted it for many years. But now that I've used one all summer as a Wildlife Technician here in the Tonto Basin, Arizona, I can't immagine going outside without it.

Oh dear, I thought about it and immediately thought, "The Internet!!!!"...

... however, certainly there are a few others which don't immediately come to mind.

Penicillin, vaccinations, and such. Those are truly modern technologies I'd probably have trouble living without!

I think it would be my MacBook.. I just can´t live without it. And, of course, the internet!!!

Well could actually live without all of it, but it would not be as fun. :>) But would have to say the computer and cell phone. Cell phones really do become life savers. Computers connects you to so many places you otherwise could not go to.

I would have to say, if by "modern" we mean 90's/00's technology, I would have a horrible time living w/o my digital camera. The ability to take pictures and videos of my nieces and nephews, places I travel, friends, family, random animals in the yard is vital to me! If I didn't have my cell, I could use my house phone. If I didn't have TV or my computer w/ the 'net, I would have more time to read and write by hand! But to lose my ability to take a picture of Mr. Bear in every hotel room I visit... this I can not even imagine!

Nothing. Whatever technology I have now, that I didn't have before, I can do without again.

I probably couldn't live without my phone, which shames me to be honest, because there was a time when I quite enjoyed just being able to walk around with my own thoughts as company. I don't actually know when I became so dependant on other people.

Whoa, the one thing that I couldn't live without....my IPOD. Thank the heavens for this little invention. I love music and I don't know if I could go back to listening to CD's.

There was a time when my pen and I had this umbilical connection. I couldn’t think without a pen in my hand. Last week my computer was out for repairs for a few days and withdrawal symptoms set in almost immediately.

One of the things I don't think I could live without is my cell phone. I hate not being able to text someone to find out what they're doing at that moment, exactly. It's just extremely necessary for my life as of late =.

I hate to say it but I love my phone. It's my little friend wherever I go :) Plus I just got a new iPhone so I'm loving the novelty.

Once we went on "vacation" to one of those places with no ammeneties like TV, Radio, phone, etc...even the cellphone had no signal. I'm pretty sure it was called "Hell". So take your pick of any of the above and add my iPod and internet to the list and that's what I obviously cannot live without.

Definitely the pretty little macbook I am typing on right now. My life can be contained within this 13 inch box. I watch Friends episodes on it when I have had a bad day, I read inspiring blogs whenever I can, and I write on my own blog to figure out my thoughts.
=] my laptop is my friend.

You know I read several of the comments before I posted, because I mostly wanted to know what others said...and honestly I am surprised. For those that I read, only one person mentioned a few of the basics, for instance, the microwave oven, or even the refrigerator. I could for sure live without my cell phone, but (and maybe this is the fat kid in me) I don't know what I would do without these two basics.

That's easy. It would have to be this computer I'm writing with now. It offers way too many things I can utilize: gaming, chatting, blogging, emailing, viewing, listening to music, watching video...It goes on and on unlike this minute. TC -JaY

Hmm.. I could definitely not live without the internet. It's kind of obvious, but rightly so - it serves so many facets of daily life, from communication and entertainment to a valuable source for quick (and occasionally reliable) information. Without it, we wouldn't even have this blog, now, would we? ;)

7 months ago I would have said my Cell Phone, but I have been deployed for the last 6 months and I haven't had my cell phone, nor do I feel the need to have one. Now I guess it would be my iTouch. I am obsessed with my iPod!!

My cellphone. I cannot go without contact with my loved ones. I used it all the time to check my emails and see what everybody is up to un facebook.

I have to agree with everyone. What do I do without my cell phone? I can't believe people lived without them. I just wrote a blog post about how I lost my phone and didn't freak out. I don't really know why. My whole life is on that thing. If I lost it, I'd miss every appointment and everything. And minute...

Two years ago I would have bet money that I couldn't live without my cell phone. But then my son asked me to stop being on it when I was with him. I picked him up from school during work hours, so it wasn't always easy at first. Then I stopped answering my phone during lunch, too. Turns out there's probably nothing I couldn't live without, technology-wise.

I don't know how I ever lived without the internet. The card catalog was my friend as the library when doing research for papers, but it is much more efficient now with the use of an instant resource at your fingertips. I think HS must be much easier now.

I can live without my cellphone, so it's not mobile technology that I can live without.

Central heating. I hate being cold in anyway, and so this would be my biggest sacrifice. Everytime it rains my heart blleds for ancestors that faced the daily grind in the cold and wet without a warm home to look forward to. I let it go, though, if meant everything else invented since 1800 went too.

Hmmm. If you call not-as-happy-as-living-with-them a trouble then, so many things. From internet to portable mp3 player. From dictionary in my mobile phone to the text editor in my computer. But if you are thinking about the real trouble then i will have trouble without guiding system in a missile, chain-reaction controller in a nuclear power plant, railway/air traffic system to name a few...

My Camera!! Although it is a recent addition to my life, it brings so much that is new and exciting. If I were to pack up life and move to the bush (as I am often tempted to do), it would be the only piece of Technology I would take with...

I didnt get to do this yesterday, so I need to do 2 today. i would need to say the computer or the mp3 player, or my car. Geeze there are so many out there, they I use all the time. My cell phone with texting. Modern life is very convenient, that is for sure.

My cell phone definitely takes first place. Just think what we can do with the cell phone compared to the outdated house phone and outside phone booth.

I call if I'm going to be late for an appointment; I leave messages when the other party isn't available; and, three-way calling to mention a few. (Oh, don't forget using the camera.) That's my favorite. Don't forget that you don't have to run around looking for a phone book to find it didn't work, and you loose your change. Debra

I hate to say my cell phone because I guess you should be able to live without your phone... but it's the only thing that connects me to my Marine (other than good old pen & paper but that's a much longer process and not quite as refreshing as hearing someone's voice after an extended period of time).

some sort of music player, whether my home stereo, a boom box, portable CD player, even the computer (but no MP3 player here yet!).

i love music and listen to all kinds. i couldn't live the quality of life that i do without any way to listen to music.

Undeniably my most valued piece of technology would be my WHEELS! Feet are so limiting and I just can't imagine getting around with 5 kids in winter on a dogsled.

angelcakes said...

I hate to say it, but I probably couldn't get along anymore without my cellphone...I know I really could, but if I ever forget it at home, I panic. And I don't even need it all the time, but without it I feel disconnected and worry about getting into accidents and not being able to call people. It's scary how attached I am to this device.

Daydreaming said...

I wholeheartedly agree with the person who said that living without a car would be a real hardship, at least for me. I would welcome a respite without my computer. I seldom use my cell phone, and the Internet gets to be a bit much sometimes. I find my cell phone annoying, mostly.

Technology is like a pond and you should dive in it as early as poss coz this pond then turns into a lake and then a river making it difficult to follow the stream
