Today's Writing Prompt: Artistic

Write about the most artistic thing you did or created in 2009.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Seriously Why Can't I?

That's easy, I created my blog. I started it mostly to connect with my military girlfriends scattered across the country. Just because we couldn't sit around the kitchen drinking wine, I could throw out my wildest comments there instead. But what I didn't realize it that it would open me up to a whole new world. I finally found my "tribe".

Congratulations, Seriously Why Can't I! Your post really captures the joy of blogging--I'm so glad you discovered it! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: 40

If you're younger than 40:Describe where you'd like to be at the age of 40.

If you're 40 or older: Describe what your life was/is like at the age of 40.

Happy birthday to my husband, The Engineer! As of today, he's...well, maybe I shouldn't tell you how old he is. (But I bet you can guess....)

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: dimax

On my fortieth birthday my three year old daughter and I shared a dinner out. She was in a snarky mood and amused herself by complaining and drawing in her mashed potatoes with her fingers and wiping her hands on her dress. My husband was out of town so I felt very sorry for myself. Now my headstrong toddler is applying to colleges. That day was 2 1/2 years before my cancer diagnosis and an even 3 years before my dad died. I wish I could go back to that day and appreciate it. The best that I can do is try to appreciate today.

Congratulations, dimax! What a touching story (and a great reminder to me, a mom of young children.) Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog if you have one!

Today's Writing Prompt: Carpe diem

How would you like to "seize the day" in 2010?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Barga

WEll, you see, the day is a crafty beast. It is so crafty, that sometimes you must hide from it, stalking it, before you can finally seize it.

My method of seizing the day would be to create some sort of trap. I would convince it that it was properly stored in a month, and then I would mess with the month. Then, when the 28th day of February was confused on if it was the last day or not, I would seize it.

That, my friends, is how I seize days.

Congratulations on another win, Barga! I like unexpected, witty responses like this one.

Today's Writing Prompt: Never

Fill in the blank: "I never thought I would_________, but I did." (Feel free to explain!)

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Janet

I never thought I would snap my fingers at my kids while I was on the phone, just like my mother always had. But I did it, while I was on the phone with my brother. The line went quiet, then he said, "did you just snap your fingers??" "Yeah," I said, "I think I did. Crap."

Congratulations on another win, Janet! You perfectly captured that moment when a woman suddenly realizes she's turning into her mother. (Not that that's always a bad thing!) Very funny response!

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 12/13-12/19.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Jeff D'Antonio (Monday's winner)

Prompt: Build. What would you like to build in 2010?

A bright future for my children, a bridge to the past, an elevator to the moon, a telescope that would show me what's beyond the edge of the universe...

...and a window into Heaven.

*sigh*

So many projects, so little time. Heading out to Home Depot now.

Congratulations, Jeff D'Antonio! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog, if you have one. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Today's Writing Prompt: Conflict

Write about a recurring conflict you have with someone you love.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Stu Pidasso

They Battle of the Bed is legenary in our family. My ex and I are both covere hogs and fought each and every night for the majority of the covers. It went as far as involving preemptive stikes to get a leg up on each other. When I nailed the sheets to the side of the bed on my side, it was the beginning of the end as neither of us are good losers. She took the kids, the bank accounts and most everything in the house, but I kept the bed and all the linens on them. I WON......but lost.

Congratulations on another win, Stu! Your combination of humor and heartbreak is so compelling.

Today's Writing Prompt: Day after

How do you feel the day after Christmas?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Tom

The day after Christmas is always a sad day around our house. Its the day the grand kids leave, taking our great grandson with them.

Every load of clothes and toys that we put in the mini-van makes my heart heavier. Hugging and kissing good-bye until next year. Watching them drive away.

They are gone now. Where are the after Christmas Ads? Got a great grandson we have to start shopping for for Christmas.

Congratulations on another win, Tom! This is touching. We live far from family too. (Skype helps!)

Toys Done, Check.
Sled oiled, Check.
Kiss Mrs. Claus, Check.

Today's Writing Prompt: Ornament

Write about a Christmas tree ornament, or other holiday decoration, you remember from childhood.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Heather

I do remember always loving my Grandmother's Christmas Tree. It was covered in white porcelain ornaments. The old fashioned kind you can't buy anymore. When she died, her belongings were split among her children and I was disappointed not to receive any of the ornaments I treasured. I never told anyone.

A year later, I received a package in the mail at Thanksgiving. It held a dozen white porcelain snowflakes. Thank you to whomever sent it to me. I wish I knew who you were and how you knew.

Congratulations, Heather! This is such a touching story. Thank you for sharing it. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Word

Write about a word you really dislike.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Ellie Keschova

I hate when my kids say "that is gay". It is a way of putting other people down. What they really mean to say is that something is stupid or they dislike it. Instead they use gay (or some say Jew) to mean stupid. You can really just fill in the blank and fill in any race or religion or sexual preference or gender or name. I think it just shows how ignorant and intolerant someone is.

Congratulations, Ellie Keschova! I really appreciate you writing this. I agree; using "gay" (or "retarded," etc.) to mean stupid should be unacceptable in the 21st century. I hope it is, before long. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog, if you have one!

One-Minute Writing of the Week: Megan

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 12/6-12/12.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Megan (Monday's winner)

Prompt: Like. What do you wish you liked...but you don't?

I wish I liked onions. I've hated them since I was a kid. They seemed to stare up at me, their scaly sides gleaming. I hated the awful crunch under my back teeth, that sound that told me I was about to gag. My best friend liked to tease me about it. “Hey Meg,” she'd say, her voice rising with excitement. “That pizza you had the other day? It had ONIONs under the cheese. Big ones!” I vowed to never eat anything at her house again that I hadn't dissected first.

Congratulations, Megan! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog, if you have one. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Today's Writing Prompt: Movie

You're making a holiday movie. Briefly describe its plot.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: --V--

Home Alone: Kevin's Revenge

After years of unsuccessful therapy, and a brief stint in a mental institution, an angry Kevin decides to attack the family that repeatedly abandoned him as a child. Now a successful thief and master of hijinks, he reunites with former captor and recently released Marv, to hit his family when its the most vulnerable--Christmastime.

Tagline: A Christmas guaranteed to be remembered..

Congratulations, --V--! This is hilarious! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Santa

Write about the time when you stopped believing in Santa Claus. (Alternatively, you may write about why you still believe...or why you never believed.)

Thanks, BridgetFurey, for submitting today's prompt! Take a minute to visit Bridget's blogs, memories are just where you laid them, a broad in london, and Trials and Tribulations of a College Student.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Little Miss Scatterbrain

I was always a skeptical child. So when I looked under my parents' bed looking for my cat, i found gifts neatly wrapped (in my mother's handwriting) 'from santa'.

But it doesn't matter. I have two brothers aged 10 and 11 and pretty soon they'll stop believing. I'm not going to be the one to do that. I'm willing to play along for years.

Congratulations, Little Miss Scatterbrain! Your response made me smile. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: davidseven

I watch the sleigh lift off, as it has every year for two millenia.

It never gets old.

As it gains height, and fades into just another glowing star in the festive sky, I wonder - not for the first time - what He did to deserve this job. I can still remember my own sentencing, all those centuries ago. 500 years of hard labour, and an embarrasing uniform.

I'll be eligible for parole in 2100, but poor Nick still has a long way to travel.

I don't know whose toes he trod on with those oversized boots of his, but it must have been someone important.

Oh well, breaks over. Only 32850 days left - but who's counting.

Ho-Ho-Ho indeed!

Congratulations on another win, davidseven! What a creative way to respond to this prompt. I particularly like the line, "I don't know whose toes he trod on with those oversized boots of his...." (This was the first of a thoroughly entertaining group of responses--thanks to everyone who wrote something for this prompt!)

Today's Writing Prompt: House

Imagine you are building a house, but you must build it from a very unconventional material. What material will you use?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: John

Isn't it obvious? Blocks of medium cheddar cheese resemble bricks and peanut butter used liberally to cement the cheese bricks together. Not to mention the convenience of a cheese brick house when you have a craving for nachos. It makes sense doesn't it?

Congratulations on another win, John! I'm definitely coming over to your house next time I need a mid-afternoon snack.

One-Minute Writing of the Week: Rachel

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 11/29-12/5.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Rachel Cotterill (Friday's winner)

Prompt: Snow. Write about a memory you have of playing in the snow. If you've never been in snow, reflect on that.

Last year I made a snow angel. We had a couple of feet of snow (a lot, for here) and I couldn't remember having made one before. Just 'being an adult' seemed like a poor reason not to, so I lay down in the field and did it. It was great fun!

Rachel provided us with photo proof of her angelic act:

Congratulations, Rachel! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Today's Writing Prompt: Want

Complete this thought:

"All I want for Christmas* is..."

*Feel free to replace "Christmas" with a different holiday of your choice.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: TheGreatest

I asked my parents and my family to give me clothes, money, some books, etc, but all I want for Christmas is a Metallica's CD. I will never ask them to give me that. I'm afraid they will think their little girl is a crazy metal fan.

Guess what, I am.

Congratulations, TheGreatest! Your prompt was such an interesting, honest story of a teenager/parent relationship. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Award

Come up with an end-of-the-year award (serious or tongue-in-cheek) for someone you work with. If you don't work with someone, give the award to someone you know.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Just Me

I am handing out the "Moving Target" Award to my boss who has manipulated, changed his story, blamed others, pointed the finger, lied, and forgotton his own stories too many times to count. This is the first boss I have ever had that I can't figure out how to work with because he is always a moving target.

Congratulations on another win, Just Me! And be sure to pass my congratulations along to your boss when you provide him with this prestigious award!

Today's Writing Prompt: Restaurant

You are starting your own restaurant. What is the name and theme?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Kate

Oh, mine would be called "Dew Drop Inn," and it would a be a cozy place, with old upholstered sofas and beautiful wallpaper. People could come in and order huge bowls of my mom's soup (with plenty of vegetarian options), and tear off hunks of homemade bread, and then they could sit and talk with old friends for hours while I slipped them extra tea bags for free.

Congratulations on another win, Kate! And let me know if you start this restaurant--boy do I want to visit!

Today's Writing Prompt: Archeologist

If you were an archeologist, where would you most like to dig?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Bridget Furey

I would love to go to Egypt & explore the pyramids. What if my eyes were to find something that every other archeologist before me missed?

Congratulations, Bridget on another win! I love the optimism of this response. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blogs!

Friday Fiction: Office

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Hank

Robin opened the web page and read the entry to herself. "Write a brief bit of fiction using the prompt 'Snow'."

"Hmm," she thought, "That seems vaguely familiar." Pushing the blurry memory aside she decided to think about her response on the way to work to make the most of her 60 seconds.

As she drove to the office through the softly falling snow she passed by newly constructed snowmen in front yards, their decorations now sporting a soft camouflage. A red hat and scarf keyed a wonderful and almost forgotten memory, transporting her to a magical time when she was 6 years old and sitting in her dad's office. His pipe--never smoked in the other parts of their home--smelled wonderful. Curled up on the leather couch and wrapped in a family quilt, she sipped hot cocoa through a layer of mini marshmallows. The frosted windows hindered the view of the field that led to the woods and the mountains blocked the morning sun but you could still make out the snowman they had made together standing guard over an empty white expanse, the contrasting red hat and scarf giving its position away. She quietly watched her dad meticulously draw what was to be a someone's house. As he pored over each line with the pipe clenched in his teeth, he noticed Robin's stare. His huge smile--with his eyes, too--flooded her with love. He winked and then returned to his work, the smile still glowing on his face.

Robin parked in the garage, took the elevator up to her office where she started the coffee and booted up her computer. While she waited she looked out the ninth floor window at the hustle and bustle below. An ambulance with its screaming siren sped by and momentarily drowned out the background that haunted her most of day. She turned around and the picture of her dad caught her eye. His eyes told her everything--again.

She knew exactly what she wanted to use her one minute to say and quickly pulled up the site. And then she was distracted for just a moment. Something was different.

"Write a brief bit of fiction set in an office."

"Ha!" she thought. "It doesn't matter."

Congratulations on another win, Hank! For those who don't know, I originally accidentally posted last week's "Snow" prompt again, then came back and fixed it. Hank, I loved the way you wove my gaffe into your story!

Today's Writing Prompt: Biography

Write a one-minute biography of someone you know/knew personally.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Heather

Born to a strict Catholic family in 1941, he was the exact middle child, with four brothers and sisters on either side. After joining the Navy and traveling the world, he settled down in New Jersey and got a job with the phone company. He met and married a woman he would later regret stringing along, and they had three children. Now, at 68 years old, he can't even remember their names.

Congratulations on another win, Heather! I'm not sure what it is that draws me about your story--maybe the very real heartbreak of it. Thank you for sharing it. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Holiday Party

Write about a memorable holiday party you've attended.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Sanctum's Muse

The most memorable party I remember attending was one to which my husband (then boyfriend) brought a cake he had baked at home. While the cake was cooling on the stove before the party, his cat ate a huge hole out of the center. His solution? Cut around the hole and fill it with frosting. The cake was served to our fellow church members. I was too freaked out to try any.

Congratulations, Sanctum's Muse! This is a great story...but hopefully not too many of your party guests read it! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog, if you have one!

Today's Writing Prompt: Hug

Come up with a simile or metaphor for how you feel when you get a really good hug.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Mike Trippiedi

Having grown up in home where people didn't express their emotions, a good hug often makes me feel like a homeless cat that has just found a person who is nice to me. I like it, but am not quite sure what to do.

Congratulations on another win, Mike! I love this image. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

One-Minute Writing of the Week: Marc

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 11/22-11/28. (I'm still playing catch-up naming winners from the week of Thanksgiving!)

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Marc (Friday's winner)

Prompt: Friday Fiction: Up and Down. Write a brief bit of fiction using the words "Up," "Down," or both. (Prompt submitted by Call Me Cate.)

She called me her little roller coaster.

"Baby, life is sure good when you're on the way up," she would say with a half smile, "but then it gets real, real scary when you're on the way down."

I'd smile or shrug or laugh, maybe even apologize, because she only ever said things like that when times were good and it was safe for her to do so. She knew better than to mock me when the booze stood swaying at the controls of my thoughts and actions, like a foul-mouthed sailor at the helm of his ship. Well, she didn't know before, but she only needed to make that mistake once.

I was her little roller coaster and I didn't know how to stop to let her off the ride.

Congratulations, Marc! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Today's Writing Prompt: Blues

Channel a blues singer, writing about why you've "got the bluuuuues."

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Marc

I've got the blues
Wisdom I did lose
Four of them in fact
It was a terrible act
But at least all this ice
On my cheeks feels pretty nice

Marc, four wisdom teeth short of a happy mouth

Congrats on another win, Marc! I enjoyed your blues song...but I hope your mouth is feeling 100% better now.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Coppertop

The snow blew sideways across the road. This was a stretch of highway they'd researched for wind farms, but found that it was too windy. I knew there were mountains to the west, and even though it was ten o'clock in the morning, the world was a gray twilight. I could see the road if I squinted and had my brights on, and I wished for taillights ahead of me to guide the way. I saw two trucks, overturned in the median, lights shining through the fat flakes. I drove on.

After ten minutes and two miles, another wreck in the median: a pickup hauling a travel trailer. The cab of the truck was slightly smashed upside down. The sliding tracks were fresh. I could see two people inside, their hands below them, pressed against the roof.

I pulled over and put my hazards on. I hesitated. Do I leave my three year old in the back of my car while I help the people in the pickup? What if some driver behind me keys in on my hazards and thinks he needs to follow them through the haze like a beacon, and instead he smashes into my baby while I'm pulling a stranger out of a truck?

I dial 911 and continue on. Just another primal justification for doing nothing, taking no action, when I might have been able to save the people in the pickup.

Congratulations, Coppertop! I liked the way you explored an interesting ethical issue here. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: December

December can be a crazy month. What is your plan for making December 2009 into the month you want it to be?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Janet

My plan to make December 2009 the best it can be started back in January 2009. For the first time ever, I planned ahead. Way ahead. December is here and I am welcoming her (it? him?) with open arms. I am relaxed, the gifts I've purchased are better than ever, tailored to each recipient, wrapped and ready to go. For the first time, I feel truly free to share in the delight of my children and to focus each day, as a family, on the whole point of it all, Christ. It took me a long time, but I finally got a clue.

Congratulations on another win, Janet! I kind of expected the end of your response to say, "Ha ha, just kidding!" It sounds almost too good to be true. Maybe I need to start doing some of that advance planning in January 2010!
