Today's Writing Prompt: Old friend

Write about an old friend you've lost touch with and would like to talk to again.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Ron.

Hard To Reach You Now

That phone number
11 digits long &
takes forever to dial,
all nines and sixes,
sevens and nines;
in the end, a double zero. Impossible.

Congratulations on another win, Ron! This is a thought-provoking response.

Today's Writing Prompt: Miniature

Computers, cell phones, mp3 players...so many pieces of technology have been made smaller more and more through the years. What do you wish would be miniaturized?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Angela

If I could miniaturise anything in the world? It would be me! If only for a day. I think it would be cool to wander through the giant streets, finding what people have dropped. Shiny coins, giant lollipop sticks, and if I’m really lucky? A chocolate sweet! I’d weave through the giant grasses and weeds, chasing bumblebees!

Congratulations, Angela! Your response was creative, and the thought of a huge piece of chocolate is heavenly. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

One-Minute Writing of the Week: Leatherdykeuk

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 2/14-2/20.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Leatherdykeuk (Friday's's winner)

Prompt: Friday Fiction: Fence. Write a brief bit of fiction using the prompt "Fence."

The Swordwoman's Garden

In her garden, separating the firepit
from the vegetable plot (under construction)
where she grew her cabbages and potatoes,
she built a fence.

And she being she, she made it a piece of art
and scoured the shed for useful things
and the local tip, though not the official one
but the one the locals used.

The posts were made of tree trunks
and range from three inched thick to almost a foot
(though on top of that she cemented a gargoyle
like a finial).

Between the posts she fastened top and bottom rails
of old iron bars and remnants of railings
from when they bulldozed the allotments
next to the cemetery.

The space she filled in with anything she could weld
(and she learned to weld quite quickly)
bicycle wheels, garden forks, bits of cutlery
which clattered in the breeze.

But pride of place (for she was fond of puns)
was a dozen authentic combat swords –
a longsword, a side sword and several rapiers –
from her days of fencing.

Congratulations, Leatherdykeuk! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Friday Fiction: Chase

Write a brief bit of fiction using the prompt "Chase."

Friday Fiction is your opportunity to write a short (short, short, short) story. Many participants use more than one minute for Friday Fiction prompts, and I open up the One-Minute Writing of the Day contest to entries of various lengths.

Click on the "Friday Fiction" tag beneath the post to see more examples of Friday Fiction writings.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Heather

We'd first met Chase when he was two-and-a-half. He had wandered off the street and into our house. I was washing dishes when his little body walked over to the refrigerator and opened it, his mouth dropping open. "Can I have something to eat?" he garbled in typical two-year-old fashion.

"Where are your parents?" was all I could say. Eventually, I learned dad had been out of the picture since before he was born. He only showed up to beat on mom. Mom had serious mental health issues, but refused to seek help.

We adopted Chase in our hearts. We watched him grow from a toddler to a teenager, frequently providing what his parents chose not to. He dropped out of school and was working full-time to support his mother. It was admirable, but he should have been enjoying his senior year and visiting colleges.

"What can we do?" I asked my husband as we digested the facts.

Congratulations on another win, Heather! I want to know what happens next...and to me, that's one marker of a good story.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Sara_Ortiz (Tuesday's's winner)

Prompt: Storm. Explain how you feel during a rain or snow storm.

Today's Writing Prompt: Experts

Complete this thought: "I'm not sure I trust the experts who say..."

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Jennifer

...trust me. If I learned anything from past experiences, people who tell you to trust them, are more unsure about themselves than you are of them. Trust is earned, not spoken. I'm an expert on the matter... so you can trust me.

Congratulations, Jennifer! I love your wit. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Grandparents

Write about a childhood memory you have of your grandparent(s), or another member of your extended family.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: radhika92

the best memory i have with my grandparents, is playing hide and seek with them when i was little. my grandmother wears a traditional Indian sari everyday, and my favorite hiding place would be under the 'palla' of her sari (the length of cloth that hangs loose behind you). i would clamber onto her tummy, and she would pull her 'palla' over me so that she looked almost as if she were going to have quadruplets, and it always delighted me that my grandfather never realized that that giggling wobbly mass of cloth was me!
=)

Congratulations, radhika92! This is such a charming, fun story. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Question

What is the biggest question in your life that you'd like to have answered?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Ron.

I guess it would be this: Why can't I rid myself, once and for all, of the firm but clearly erroneous conviction that I have more answers than questions?

Congratulations, Ron.! Your response is written in a compelling way, and I appreciate the self-awareness in it. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Medal

Imagine that for the next Olympics, they've decided to replace medals with a different prize. It's your job to decide what the new prize is. What will it be?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Maire

Ah ... without our blood, sweat, tears and devotion, where would they be these super-duper athletes with their bulging muscles and their extreme performance ability? I say give us the prize! A day at a super-duper SPA - for the Super (-duper) Parents Award.

Congratulations, Maire! This is a fun idea--and hey, I kind of like the idea of getting some praise when my kids succeed! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Distraction

What is a sure-fire way that you become distracted from the task at hand?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: L. Boone

I'm actually pretty focused when I want to write, but I don't write with my right hand. I'm left handed. Darn it, I left the milk out on the kitchen counter. Ok, this is seriously counter productive.

Congratulations, L. Boone! This is very clever--I had to read it multiple times to "get" all the stream-of-consciousness distraction! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

One-Minute Writing of the Week: davidseven

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 1/31-2/6.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: davidseven (Friday's's winner)

Prompt: Friday Fiction: Rain. Through the centuries, there have been many stories about what rain really is--God crying, etc. Write your own fictional fantasy about why it rains.

Millenia ago, when the earth was young, and covered with sea, some of the water became frustrated.

"I want to be an individual." said one drop.

"So do we." Chorused some more.

Eventually they began grumbling about having to share space with all the other water-drops, and decided to leave.

So one warm night, after the sun had been shining all day, they built up enough momentum to rise.

And rise.

and rise.

Until they touched the heavens.

And they say such beautiful things. Stars spinning through space, empires rise and fall.

But something was missing. Something in their heart called them home.

And every so often, when the need builds up too much, they thunder to the ground in an effort to go home. But for most, the ground is dry, because the oceans have long since died. Very few make it home, most just thunder and pound the earth in their frustration.

But the ones that get home....

Oh the stories they tell!

Congratulations, davidseven! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Congratulations, Carrie! I like the variety in your answer; it reminds me of a bunch of random things, thrown into a storage box. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Olympics

You are determined to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games. What event will you ask that they include so that you will be sure to win?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: © Princess Vulgarities

Sprinting the 400m while chowing on a box of chocolate coated donuts! I have quite the knack for eating while I'm moving. I'm not saying I'd do it in any lady-like manner! I've heard it can be quite the challenge. Well, I'm game to win it!

Congratulations, © Princess Vulgarities! I think I'd like to watch this event. Better yet, I might like to compete! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

Today's Writing Prompt: Gift

What is one of the strangest gifts you've ever received?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: LeAnn

Once somebody gave me a gosling. That was weird. But Stranger and much more endearing was when I opened a letter from my boyfriend who was away at school. Little filings fell out of it and I was puzzled. I read the enclosed letter and laughed. He had sent me the remains of his goatee (which I hated) as a signal he was coming home.

Congratulations, LeAnn! That is totally a weird (yet thoughtful) gift! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Rabbit (Monday's winner)

Prompt: Collage. You are making a collage that represents your life. Describe the collage.

My life, in the living, has become a delicious dervish of a collage. With the new year I took out my proverbial scissors. I cut away the bad bits. I framed out the glories. A little glue. A little glitter. I step back, looking at the creation unfold and can't wait to see what comes next to fill in the blank spaces. It's a good year for growth. It's a good year for creating. And in the end, I will have a masterpiece.

Congratulations, Rabbit! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: RockerJewlz

"It's all SO commercial"! she barked as she gaped at the gaudy window display. "Do they really think they are going to sell people on THAT"?

As she stormed off towards the street corner, Louisa was immersed in the frustration that this annual event had somehow transformed from one of sharing sentiments between sweethearts to a blatant business opportunity of manipulating consumers towards believing they were supposed to shower one another with material representations of their feelings.

She became determined to find a way to help people recognize this turn in their attitudes and bring them back to a fresh level of consciousness.

As the corner street light blazed red, she raised her gaze to a huge billboard flashing an ad high above the street.

"Hmmm", Louisa thought. "I wonder how much an ad on that board would cost? I wonder..."

Congratulations, RockerJewlz! I'm curious to know what Louisa did next. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog!

I'm going to be greedy and tell you of a more recent claim to fame - though, again, only local!

What is the most annoying thing you encounter online or in email?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Sanctum's Muse

"If you love God, send this to everyone you know. The Bible says, "If you are ashamed of me, I'll be ashamed of you before my Father..." Seriously, there's nothing more annoying to me than that kind of emotional manipulation. I don't think God is going to judge me based on all the tear-jerking spam I didn't send in His name.

Congratulations, Sanctum's Muse! I really enjoyed the way you made your point. (And I happen to agree.)

One-Minute Writing of the Week: John

Each week I choose one of the daily winners and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 1/17-1/23.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: John (Monday's winner)

Prompt: Parent. If you are a parent, how did you feel when you first found out you'd become one?

"You probably had a bad taco last night," I said to my wife as she was doubled over and depositing last night's taco into the toilet. "I kind of have bubble guts myself, so I'm sure that's what it is, just a little food poisoning." I heard the tearing of cardboard and the crinkling of plastic wrap. She's in there peeing on a stick, I thought to myself but not really giving it too much thought. "John!!!" she yelled in a hybrid tone of jubilation and horror. It was an amazing, terrifying, world altering feeling that a parent to be never forgets.

Congratulations, John! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog, if you have one. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

Today's Writing Prompt: Hobby

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Coppertop

Scrapbooking
that social
gathering
where we re-live pure
precious moments
holds no spiritual
substance for me.
I'd rather write
in solitude.

Congratulations on another win, Coppertop! I enjoyed your poetic disparaging of scrapbooking!

Today's Writing Prompt: Black Market

What item or product (if any) would you risk buying on the black market, if it became illegal to purchase it?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:

Black markets turn gray when the life of a loved one is at risk. What wouldn't I do to buy medicine for my beloved?

Congratulations on another win, Butternut Squash! "Black markets turn gray"--what a great way with words you have.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Today's Writing Prompt: Exploration

How much of a priority should governments put on space exploration, and why?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: christine

If we decided, globally, not to investigate "space" for, say, ten years, but instead concentrated on the space surrounding us, including the oceans, maybe the world would be in a better state so that if/when we make contact with another race they won't laugh at our inability to sort our own problems out!
Whew, what a long sentence, I hope it makes sense. Minute's up:)

Congratulations on another win, christine! I enjoyed the contrast you made between the space "up there" and the space "down here."

Monday, February 1, 2010

Today's Writing Prompt: Group

You have an opportunity to switch places for a day with a member of a group that is subject to discrimination, to understand them better. Who will you be, for a day?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Kathleen A. Ryan

I would trade places with my twelve year old son, who has Asperger’s Syndrome. He is so complex, and misunderstood by so many, but is a loving, affectionate, empathetic soul. He faces frustration on a daily basis, and feels, thinks, and believes things unlike others. I’d inhabit his world for a day to better understand his struggles and figure out ways to improve society’s misperceptions as a result.

Congratulations on another win, Kathleen! I really liked the personal element of your response.
