One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: radhika92

drifter
ethereal
she floats
between this world and that
her hair browned
bleached
with dirt and the sun,
straggling behind her
as she lifts her face
grimy
paled
eyes widened
wider than normal people's can be
light eyes
shocking the rest of her face with their beauty
unaware of existence around her
drifter
she waits
for luck to fall into her palm.

Congratulations on another win, radhika92! I love this poem.

Today's Writing Prompt: Skill

Write about the most recent skill you've acquired.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Jessica

Driving!

I'm 29 years old and only started driving this year. I just never learned as a teen and it's a skill harder to obtain once you no longer live with your parents, especially if you live downtown or in a city with excellent public transit.

Thankfully, I have a very patient husband and I'll be taking my license exam in the next few weeks.

Congratulations on another win, Jessica! I found your story interesting--and kudos to you (in advance) for getting your license!

Today's Writing Prompt: Point of view

Think about a time you were recently in public. Describe what you were doing, from the point of view of a stranger observing you.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: April

"She must be a single mom," I thought as I watched a slim brunette with needle-short hair struggle to open a stroller in the Target parking lot. The strain in her face suggested many lonely hours of soothing a fussy infant, and the effort of hauling a heavy carrier to and from her car. "Such a shame," I thought. But then as the woman pulled her baby from the car, her face lit up with a loving smile, and I glimpsed words on the baby's shirt: "My dad is a sailor."

Congratulations on another win, April! I chose your response because...it made me get tears in my eyes. Thanks for writing it (and huge thanks to your husband!)

Today's Writing Prompt: Cat or dog

Are you a cat person or a dog person (or another type of person altogether)? Why?

Big thanks to Dani for submitting today's prompt! Dani (along with fellow bloggers Heather, Elizabeth, and Kelly) has another fantastic writing prompt blog, with daily pictures that can inspire you to write. Be sure to check out their blog, Write With Pictures.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Heather

I knew that damned creature lurked beneath the bed just waiting for light to ascend and my ankles to descend. It never failed. Every morning I awoke in that strange bed, I'd enter the breakfast nook with new scratches mixed with weeping blood and a frustration that far outweighed the sting of pain. "I hate your cat," I'd say as a morning greeting. My middle school best friend simply responded with a shrug. Is it any wonder I am a dog person?

Congratulations, Heather! What an awful experience...but you did a great job describing it!

Today's Writing Prompt: Free

Every so often, there really is such a thing as a free lunch. Write about something free you've received.

Unsolicited advice. I've found the vast majority of it worth every penny.

Congratulations, Hedgie, on another win! I'll admit it took me a minute to "get" this...but once I did, I found the irony delicious!

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: quenntis (Tuesday's winner)

We disagree on disgreeing. My wife and I have been married for 2 years now and we sometimes wish we disagreed more about things. Well, I wish we disagreed about something. She wishes we keep agreeing with each other because we happen to work so well together. We agree to disagree on this matter.

Today's Writing Prompt: Broken

Write about a time you broke something.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Melinda

I broke my big toe in a spectacular dive to the bed where my son was about to roll off onto the floor. I caught him just as I rolled to the floor, buckling under the pain of the bone in my toe snapping in half. After a trip to the ER, X-rays, some medical tape and a pair of crutches I was back to chasing around after a newly mobile child. It is now what I like to refer to as the time literally I bent over backwards for my child.

Congratulations on another win, Melinda! Your story got my adrenaline pumping!

Today's Writing Prompt: Celebrate

What can you celebrate today?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Joanne Sher

Today I can celebrate God's goodness to me and my family - in something that is minor, but shows he loves details. Our garage door was broken. We ended up walking to our new church (only half a mile away). While there, we ran into old friends from our former church who not only drove us home, but fixed the garage door.

Congratulations, Joanne! That's a great story of God's kindness, and definitely worth celebrating! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: China

I had been told that on the in-country flights in China the pilots were military trained. I still was not prepared for such a rough flight. It felt more like being on a roller coaster going up and swooping down, going up and swooping down...
The plane was small and full, mostly with Chinese business men in dark Western suits sitting silently. Sharon was excited and chatting away. The flight conditions didn't phase her in the least. I tried to keep looking forward or out the window to minimize my airsickness, but I felt compelled to glance at Sharon now and then as she talked to me.
The familiar cold/hot prickles started and I knew I was in trouble. I pressed the back of my head against the seat and stared forward over the rows of dark heads, willing my inner ear to stop fighting the contradictory visual input and for the dizzy nauseau to go away. Instead, the prickly feelings intensified and the lurch of my stomach made me swallow hard. Finally I had to interrupt Sharon midsentence -
"I'm sorry, you may want to turn away, I'm going to be sick."
I grabbed that little bag out of the seat pocket and put my face into it just in time. I was quick and quiet about it,but when I looked up, Sharon had changed seats.
Oh well, she may be grossed out and I may be absolutely miserable, but when I meet my little daughter and can finally take her home, this will all be forgotten.

Congratulations on another win, China! I'd like to read more of this story!

Today's Writing Prompt: Five years

Think about a frustrating aspect of your life. How might you feel about it in five years?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Kenservative

I will regret the anger and resentment I sometimes feel toward my terminally ill daughter. It is a long, slow process that leaves her more and more disabled. That is the worst part; knowing it will happen and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

Congratulations, Kenservative. Your honesty is both refreshing and heartbreaking. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Today's Writing Prompt: Profession

Write about a profession that you think is unnecessary.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Stephen

I'm going to pick something from my own industry and, at the same time, betray a personal bias. Copy editors. Their job: edit the copy of professional writers. But if you're incapable of self-editing, you shouldn't be calling yourself a "professional writer" in the first place. So if the pros do the writing and the hacks stick to something they're better suited to, copy editors are rendered woefully superfluous.

Congratulations, Stephen! Your response entertained me (and made me think.) Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Today's Writing Prompt: Sound switch

Think of a sound you don't like. What sound would you like your ears to hear in its place?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Michael

Sometimes I dislike every sound and would like them all to be replaced by Jeanine laughing again when I say something funny.

Congratulations, Michael! I don't know who Jeanine is, but somehow this response makes me want to know more...one mark of a good one-minute writing. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Today's Writing Prompt: Mentor

Write about someone you have mentored or someone who has mentored you.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Em

I have been and am being mentored by my sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous. I am starting a new journey in my sobriety by sponsoring a woman. I hope to give her the same love, experience, strength and hope that my sponsor gives me. I love these one minute writing prompts :)

Congratulations, Em! I love these stories, of someone receiving help, and then paying it forward. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Today's Writing Prompt: Understand

Write about something you'll never understand.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: radhika92

this thing they try selling on teleshopping, called the "morning walker". apparently, its an alternative to a "morning walk". you're supposed to lie down, strap your legs into it, and it moves your legs for you, as if you're walking!! and apparently, people actually buy this contraption, as opposed to getting up and going for a walk!

Congratulations on another win, radhika92! I definitely don't understand that either! (But then again...I don't even care for treadmills!)

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Today's Writing Prompt: Transportation

Imagine you are planning a trip across the continent on which you live. Assuming you have unlimited time, resources, and energy, what will be your mode of transportation?

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Tin Kettle Inn

I would strap a saddle on a cheetah, and we would run across the continent. I'm sure we'd make excellent time.

Congratulations on another win, Tin Kettle Inn! I'd like to see you on that cheetah. Giddyup!

Friday Fiction: Late

Click on the "Friday Fiction" tag beneath the post to see more examples of Friday Fiction writings.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Heather

"Not until I am two weeks late," she had insisted over and over for the last month. But now that she was a few days late, it seemed she was changing her mind. Her movements slowed, her weight increased steadily, and her feet swelled. Her breath became ore labored, making it difficult at times to understand her. "We are almost there," she whispered each morning upon waking. Each night as she lay in bed, she would say, "It can't be much longer now."

The afternoon before the two week anniversary, she seemed crest fallen. "Babies come when they want to," she cried when she called form work. Cozied in a booth at dinner, she smiled for the first time that day. "Babies come when they want to," she declared.

"That's what you said this afternoon," I responded. "But our baby is coming as determined by the medical field."

"No," she said, fidgeting in her seat and still smiling. "Our baby is coming now. Do you think yuo could get the car and say several rolls of paper towel?"

Congratulations on another win, Heather! I love stories about women becoming mothers!

Thursday, June 3, 2010

Today's Writing Prompt: Let go

Write about a time you had to let go of something you loved or wanted...a person, a dream, a pet, etc.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Graciegreen

It's never easy, letting go...the very most difficult task I have ever accomplished was dropping my daughter off at her college dorm. My little girl who in kindergarten said,"Mom, sit by the phone all day in case I need to call you."

Congratulations on another win, Graciegreen! I relate to the beginning of this story. My 4-year-old tells me she doesn't ever want to move away from home. I know the years between now and college will surprise me in how quickly they pass.

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Today's Writing Prompt: Parenting

Write about a way in which parenting has changed since you were a kid (either based on what you observe, or on what the experts recommend.)

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Butternut Squash

"Screen Time," was not even a concept when I was a kid. My mother yelled at me to come in. I have to yell at my children to get them to go out.

Congratulations on another win, Butternut Squash! I like the way you expressed yourself, and I think a lot of parents agree with you.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Today's Writing Prompt: Lie

Write about one of the more ridiculous lies you've heard.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer FishrCutB8

"It's not you, it's me."

Yeah right. It's you and the guy you were making out with when I drove by your house.

Congratulations, FishrCutB8! Yikes--that's definitely a ridiculous lie. (And may I say...good riddance!) Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.
