One-Minute Writing of the Day:

Three years ago, I never would have dreamt that a touch screen "smart" phone would be the center of my existence. Back then, I could rattle off all my friends' phone numbers. I KNEW my children's numbers and addresses. Today. It's all in my phone. I'd never know how to reach anyone if my phone died. Well, there is Facebook.

Congratulations on the win, Cissy! I think many others relate to this--the other day my friend's husband couldn't tell me his wife's cell number! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:

"Can't she see that she's making a big mistake?" Sasha was pacing the marble floor.

"She's making us wear these garish gowns, isn't she?" Theresa grinned. Then her face became serious.
"What did daddy always say? It's hard to see the picture when you're standing in the frame. She's an adult now and we have to let her make her own decisions. Just be there to show her love and understanding "

Sasha stopped suddenly. "Yeah, whatever," she said dryly. "I'm going to stop this sham of a wedding? Are you with me or not?"

Congratulations on another win, Staci! I want to hear the next chapter!

The year I was 9 years old the Sears & Roebuck Christmas catalog advertised "Barbie". I wore out the pages trying to decide if I wanted the Red Flame coat or the Orange Blossom dress. Friday Fiction: Ink

Write a brief bit of fiction using the prompt "Ink."

Friday Fiction is your opportunity to write a short (short, short, short) stohttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifry. Many participants use more than one minute for Friday Fiction prompts, and I don't generally take the length of the post into account when I name a Friday winner.

If you respond to this prompt on your blog or website, be sure to visit the Weekly Mister Linky so others can easily click on your link!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Jamie

The ink had made messy blue splotches all over the inside of her bag. "Really?!" she sighed and rolled her eyes at no one.

She tossed the guilty pen in the trash and exited the plane, ignoring the attendants' cheerful good-byes.

Inside the jetway, she passed a frazzled young mother wrangling a fussy toddler into a stroller and a son (nephew?) helping a hunched over man in polyester blue pants into a wheelchair. She didn't even notice them.

Surely there was a Starbucks on the way to her next gate.

Congratulations on the win, Jamie! Of the three characters in this writing, I think most of us can relate to one...or more...of them. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Today's Writing Prompt: Hospital

Write about a time you were in the hospital (as a patient or visitor.)

If you respond to this prompt on your blog or website, be sure to visit the Weekly Mister Linky so others can easily click on your link!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Monica Manning

Experts say that we don’t remember much before the age of four, unless it was of particular significance. I was three years old when I had a double hernia operation. I have snippets of memories: eating scrambled eggs in the hospital bed; Auntie Rose and Uncle Moe bringing me a monkey toy; visiting the boy in the next room who’s casted leg was suspended from a ceiling crane; the nurse reading me a story. Oddly, the memories of any pain I may have had have evaporated.

Congratulations on another win, Monica! I enjoyed the way you expressed your early memories.

Today's Writing Prompt: School

If you could have changed one thing about a school you attended, so that it became a better school, what would you have changed?

If you respond to this prompt on your blog or website, be sure to visit the Weekly Mister Linky so others can easily click on your link!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Jeff D'Antonio

Since the school I attended is also the school I now teach in...

I would make sure every single teacher and administrator fully understands that each child who walks through these doors is just as valuable and precious as their own, and should be treated that way.

Far too many teachers and administrators see their job as little more than a place to collect a paycheck. That has to change. They need to understand that these kids are the future, and if we let them down, we lose everything.

Congratulations on another win, Jeff! I love this perspective, especially since it comes from a teacher.

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

If you respond to this prompt on your blog or website, be sure to visit the Weekly Mister Linky so others can easily click on your link!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Angie

My most memorable experience with a door-to-door salesman was traveling to all of our neighbors and friends houses with my brother when he started a new job selling Kirby vacuums. I guess he brought me along for moral support? I'll never forget the looks on people's faces when he showed them what their own vacuums were leaving behind. That job and string of other such non-desirable careers allowed my brother to put himself through college and he's now a teacher.

Congratulations on the win, Angie! Great descriptions of the product and of your brother! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

I'm an old fashioned girl. I love a good book. I enjoy cracking open a new book, smelling the pages and anticipating the journey of a new storyline. There's nothing like a bubble bath, a good glass of Merlot and a book...all at the same time.

Congratulations on the win, Staci! I love reading in the tub with a glass of wine. (However, that scenario is made even MORE perfect with my Kindle...safely in a quart-sized Ziploc in case it falls in the water!) Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Congratulations on the win, kendra! I get the feeling many others agree with you. Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Roderick

It was trick of the light, it was a trick of the eye, it was way to fool the entire world by simply never looking straight at it. She'd learned the trick when she was young, scarcely more than a girl, the ability to look beyond something, the ability to look through something, the ability to look into something. There, at the coffee shop, she conjured her little magic trick and saw him, truly saw him, not the man, but the flame that burned within. Where all others were candles, he alone was a torch, a torch that burned with a brilliant flame. Her life changed forever in the shadows cast by that flame.

Congratulations on another win, Roderick! I like your non-literal take on the prompt.

Thursday, July 14, 2011

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Michelle @ The True Book Addict

I love books and I love reading. I hate how slow I read, how backlogged I am on review books, and I really hate how I let myself get distracted from reading...TV and internet being the culprits. So that could also be a love/hate relationship with TV and the internet! That's a whole other story....

Congratulations on another win, Michelle! I'm finding myself drawn to reading after seeing your response. It's easy to lose lots of reading time by being in front of the computer!

Palms sweaty I reached for her hand. I could hear my heart, feel it in my throat. I'd been here before, never winning, always bruised- ego and all. Not this time...I pressed her, fingers laced. Mustering all my strength I knew I'd done it. The moment came, "MERCY!" she hollered, my hand pinning hers back. Failure no more, I released her showing the mercy for which she begged.

Congratulations on the win, Jenimac! I think most of us remember playing "MERCY!" as kids. Your response built up the suspense we kids felt! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Michelle @ The True Book Addict

The straw in the abandoned barn smelled musty and damp. He didn't care though. Any place was good enough for him as long as he could hide safely. He looked down at the iron shackle still hooked on his ankle. The master had kept him chained because he knew he was a runner. Somehow the chain had been weak and he was able to break it with a hatchet easily. He had been on the run for days before finding the barn. He climbed into the loft and settled down behind some bales of hay. He could hear the baying of the dogs in the distance. He could only pray they would not search the barn. As it turned out, a futile prayer.

Inspired by my current read, Roots by Alex Haley.

Congratulations on another win, Michelle! I'd like to read more!

One-Minute Writing of the Week: Billy Jorgensen

I choose one of the daily winning response from each week and feature it as the One-Minute Writing of the Week. This is for the week of 6/19-6/25.

One-Minute Writing of the Week:
Writer: Billy Jorgensen (Wednesday's winner)

Prompt: Glass. In your mind is the glass half-full, half-empty, or something else?

My kids are very spilly, so I only pour half a glass at a time for them which both increases the amount of hyperactivity that the glass can sustain while being carried and mitigates the total damage done when it is inevitably tipped beyond its operational beverage retaining angle.
This may have the long term effect of reducing their expectations in other areas of life (their baseline is a half empty glass), but then imagine how thrilled they'll be when life occasionally throws a full glass their way. They'll be like "OMG! How FULL is this glass? I can hardly believe it... better drink some before I try to carry it across the carpet to the sofa-cum-trampoline"

Congratulations, Billy Jorgensen! You're welcome to put a One-Minute Writing of the Week Winner button on your blog. Click here if you'd like to snag it.

The house guest was uninvited, but that didn't stop him from invading the house. He ate all of our food, he made a huge mess, and my poor mother was almost killed of panic and surprise, like the anticipation of the stair that isn't there. The guest? A rat.

Congratulations on another win, Denin! I hope your houseguest doesn't visit me next!

But I also declare I'll be dependent on food, shelter, clothing, oh... Maybe I do need them?

Congratulations on the win, Andrew! I love the point you made! Feel free to put a One-Minute Writer WINNER! button on your blog.

Today's Writing Prompt: Parents

Were your parents too strict, too lenient, or just right?

If you respond to this prompt on your blog or website, be sure to visit the Weekly Mister Linky so others can easily click on your link!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: Divenita

I know this is over but yes: my parents were strict when they had to teach me a lesson, lenient when i had to realize my dream. And just right when i needed their advise:)

Congratulations on another win, Divenita! Sounds like you got a pretty great set of parents, and I like the words you chose to describe them.

Weekly Mister Linky: 7/3-7/9

If you respond to a prompt on your own website/blog this week, feel free to link here! And you're also welcome to use this week's Mister Linky if you write a blog post about The One-Minute Writer.

How to use Mister Linky:
  1. Enter your name, and let us know which day's prompt you're responding to (e.g., "Beth Monday").
  2. If your prompt contains adult language or content, please put an "M" after your name and the day (e.g., "Beth Monday M").
  3. Enter the URL of the actual post that you want people to visit--not your blog or website's home page! ("http://cbethblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/one-minute-writer-response.html" would be correct; "http://cbethblog.blogspot.com" would not.)
  4. You may link multiple times throughout the week if you respond to multiple prompts.
  5. No need to leave a comment after linking (despite what the widget says!)
Has your link been deleted? This tool is not for sharing links to your blog unless your blog post is related to today's prompt, or you've blogged about The One-Minute Writer. I want the links to stay on-topic. Thanks for understanding!

Friday (oops...Saturday) Fiction: Stock

Write a brief bit of fiction using the prompt "Stock."

Friday Fiction is your opportunity to write a short (short, short, short) story. Many participants use more than one minute for Friday Fiction prompts, and I open up the One-Minute Writing of the Day contest to entries of various lengths. And occasionally I forget to write a fiction prompt on Friday, so it comes in a day late! (Thanks for the heads-up, Michelle!)

Click on the "Friday Fiction" tag beneath the post to see more examples of Friday Fiction writings.

If you respond to this prompt on your blog or website, be sure to visit the Weekly Mister Linky so others can easily click on your link!

One-Minute Writing of the Day:
Writer: J Cosmo Newbery

There once was a cook known as Pete
Who made soups for royalty to eat.
The foundation rock
Was a really good stock
In which he had washed his feet.

Congratulations on another win, J Cosmo! I'm a sucker for a great limerick--this is fantastic!

Which side of an equilateral triangle is longer? Which is more powerful, fire, air, water? One cannot rank higher any one among equals.

Congratulations on another win, June! I like your analogies.
