I was 16
my boyfriend and I
drove to DC to see
the tent city
the burned out buildings
I remember my parents
talking about that
and that uppity black man
my mother called him
causing so much trouble
I remember his voice
music with a message
a stirring in my soul
the beginning of understanding
the inequities of our world
the danger that surrounded us
bred by hatred, want, despair
and no freedom
I remember Martin Luther King
standing tall, his eyes telling us
what we should have always known
that all men deserve to be free
I remember...
and still grieve for his loss

Definitely his speech. For a school project, we had to pick an author of a book, speech, etc, and I picked MLK. His influence on the world is so amazing.

I was in Memphis last fall searching out famous barbeque. Turned a corner and pulled into the parking lot of the motel where Dr. King was shot. His car was parked in the lot. It hurt my heart to feel this history of our country. I am thankful that my Haitian grandchildren will be spared the prejudice he fought to change.
