Ten years ago following the death of my husband, a family member agreed to live (rent-free) in my house for a year, during which time she would sell my stuff and/or give it to charity. I could not bear to stay in the house myself, so I moved away.

When the year was up, my house was empty and I wanted to sell it, so I asked the family member to move.

Weeks later, I got a scary call from my homeowners insurance company. Unbeknownst to me, the family member filed a written claim with the insurance company stating she had hurt her back when she fell down the basement steps while living at my house. The insurance company accused me of being in on an "insurance scam."

Of course I had no knowledge of the family member's "fall", and was able to convince the insurance company of same. Fortunately the insurance company's policy disallowed claims from family members. End of story.
