Today's Writing Prompt: Small World

Was there ever an event that occurred outside your own state or country that had a significant impact on your life?

When you travel to other countries and come to know people there the impact is often more subtle than "significant" in a dramatic sense. Your point of view is changed. I read the newspapers and notice international news with more concern and understanding than people who have not traveled outside the USA. This becomes significant as you realize others live differently but are people like yourself in many ways. And you see that your local friends don't share that point of view.

Indonesia...December 26th, 2004. The rested and tanned on holiday, scattered around beaches beside the turquoise blue of the Indian Ocean. Paradise. Vendors seaside in thatched huts. Children building sandcastles...digging moats...near the wave wash. Then the unthinkable as the waves recede...and recede again...then even further. Some, who have never seen this phenomenon are already walking out into the damp sand...mesmerized...befuddled. At a beach-side cafe a female tourist asks a local waitress casually if this is normal. The waitress saved her life that day...screaming a single word as the table was upended and the server took her own advise and also lived to tell the tale.
